Right now, I'm drawing collision shapes onto each room. They're not solid; they just tell the engine when anything enters their space. Because Godot doesn't expose the absolute positions of collision shapes (you can get their dimensions, but not where they are in the scene), I'm also adding position markers at the top left and lower right of each room.

(Accidentally hit post on that one, but it was gonna be long as one post anyway.) Since I do have the map set up as one big contiguous area, Godot doesn't like that I want the camera to stop at the edge of a room and then go to the next room only when I enter it. So I've had to use some interesting tricks.

Although Metroid's map makes sense when you put it all together, it's not stored together in ROM, as far as I know; each room is its own thing. So you can't see the next room from the room you're in; going through a door loads the next room into RAM and transitions to the next room with a scrolling effect.

I never did get my ankle fixed. It's been a little over two years since I broke it, and a year and a half since I got the cast off, and ... I guess I just don't really notice the arthritis anymore? I don't do anything really strenuous except the stationary bike, and I'm not gonna voluntarily run on it, but ... it's just part of my life now.

It's long been the case -- and almost as long recognized -- that conservatives want to divide humans into two groups: those whom the law protects but does not bind, and those whom the law binds but does not protect. They see themselves, and especially their political leaders, as part of the first group, and it's mortally offensive to their worldview that the law is finally binding prominent conservatives, even if it does so with kid gloves so as to keep protecting them as much as possible.

Meanwhile, the four equal seasons - Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall - that start on their respective solstice/equinox are astrological seasons; that division wasn't really cemented in the public consciousness until the 1960s, when the New Age movement, of which astrology was a part, gained traction. (Fun fact: the very first horoscope printed in a newspaper was printed in the UK's Sunday Express in 1930. It was a birth chart for Princess Margaret by prominent astrologer R.H. Naylor.)

In fact, much of the US doesn't have four seasons, not to mention most of the world. Southwestern states tend to have Hot and Somewhat Less Hot, southeastern states have Dry and Rainy, etc. And they're real seasons! Can you have a Fall if you're in a desert and the supermajority of the plant life is succulents?

European colonists in what's now the US - and the idea persisted at least until the 1980s, to be clear - called the end of August "Indian Summer", because they expected autumn to start in mid-August and thought of the summer solstice as Midsummer, and it was weird to them that in mid-latitude eastern North America it stayed warm and the deciduous trees didn't start dropping their leaves until mid-September.
